Flora Toscana for the Environment
Our commitment is to minimize environmental impact throughout the entire production cycle.
Flora Toscana believes that its activity should be carried out in full respect of human rights, labor and the environment.
The awareness of the impact of our simple being and of our work on the environment must induce everyone, from the private citizen to the companies, to review our habits and our production processes.
For over 10 years Flora Toscana has applied in the company, mainly for paper, processing waste (flowers and foliage, organic) and plastic, a separate collection system, in agreement with the local waste service managers, within each of its own sites.
But differentiating is not enough.
In 2010 Flora Toscana has installed a photovoltaic system on the roof of the warehouse based in Via Caravaggio, Pescia.
In 2016 the neon electrical system was replaced with a LED system still in the warehouse in Via Caravaggio, Pescia.
In 2019 Flora Toscana has become licensee of FSC, choosing to adopt only FSC certified cardboard packaging, thus contributing to the responsible management of the world’s forests.
2019, Flora Toscana introduces PLA flower sleeves
In many sectors, not only in nursery gardening, plastic plays a significant role both in protecting products during transport and in maintaining food hygiene and freshness. Plastic can even produce environmental benefits compared to other materials, for example, it is lighter than glass and therefore reduces CO2 emissions during transport.
But we also know that bad human behavior has caused and is still causing environmental pollution of immense proportions, repercussions of which are contributing to the destruction of the seas of our planet. To date, the use of plastic is rapidly increasing worldwide, with an annual average of 170 kg of packaging waste per EU citizen, of which only 9% is recycled.
In 20109 the European Union has definitively adopted the directive that prohibits, by 2021, the use of many disposable plastic products.
Flower sleeves are not among these but Flora Toscana, with a view to packaging sustainability, wants to give a signal by introducing, in the 2019/2020 season, PLA sleeves (Clickable) compliant with the UNI EN 13432 standard : 2002, with water based ink printing, to be used for the packaging of the main 4 cut flower references moved by the cooperative, which cover about 60% of the entire cut volume. In 2019 Flora Toscana chose to use only packaging produced with FSC certified cardboard, thus contributing to the responsible management of the world’s forests.
What is FSC? in short, FSC promotes environmentally-friendly, socially useful and economically sustainable forest management worldwide. The Forest Stewardship Council ®️ (FSC®️) is in fact an international non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the management of forest ecosystems that guarantee the protection of the natural environment, bringing real benefits to the populations and local communities that depend on them , to the workers who work there and ensuring efficiency in economic terms.
For Flora Toscana this choice is included in a larger project called “Flora Toscana per ambiente” (Flora Toscana for the environment) which sees the cooperative increasingly engage in the choice of products, behaviors and values that respect the environment, because it is only with the commitment of each of us, in everyday life, at home, at work that TOGETHER we can make our contribution to waste reduction IMPORTANT and reduce OUR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT.

LED LIGHTING SYSTEM in Flora Toscana
In July 2016, Flora Toscana replaced, at its Via Caravaggio warehouse in Pescia, its 1996 Neon lights with a low environmental impact LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting system. The LED lamps not only reduce e the consumption of electricity but also do not use heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium and do not produce gas or other highly polluting substances and represent an opportunity to act concretely in favor of the Planet and considerably reduce its energy costs.
Flora Toscana’s Solar Panel System
In March 2010, Flora Toscana inaugurated a photovoltaic system on the roof of the warehouse based in Via Caravaggio (the plant and flower operation site) capable of producing 286,000 Kwh annually (power capacity of 247 KWP) and significantly reducing CO2 emissions.
1376 panels positioned on the surface of the roof equal to 1940 square meters.
The energy requirement of Flora Toscana is thus covered by Renewable Energy for about 30% during the winter and for about 50% during the summer.
